Personal Gear

Posted on September 23, 2022September 28, 2022

This is a list of riding gear, clothes and other personal equipment I’m bringing. Although we’ll have Liz & Anne following us in the car, I’ve limited myself to what I can carry on the bike. I’ll review this at the end of the trip to see what was most useful or not and what I was missing.

RIDING GEAR

  • Hi Viz Cool Rider Mesh Jacket from 6th Gear – mesh outer jacket, with a water/wind proof removable liner and a second, removable thermal liner.
  • Motorcycle pants
  • Alpinestars Andes V2 Drystar boots
  • Nolan N103 flip-up helmet – (the most comfortable helmet I’ve ever worn. Now replaced by the N100-5)
  • Nelson-Rigg Storm Rider 2 piece rain suit
  • Lyschy evaporative cooling vest
  • Aerostich Elkskin Roper gloves – great 3 season gloves
  • Aerostich Short Triple Digit Glove Covers – keeps your hands dry and the split digits allow you to cover the brakes while maintaining throttle.
  • Insulated warm gloves.
  • Sena S20 helmet communicator – This has been replace by the S20 Evo. We also purchased the Sena Expand headset so the ladies in the car can communicate with us via intercom.
  • Garmin Zumo XT GPS navigator – does not need cell signal or data

    • Sony lenses: 16 – 50 & 55 – 210
    • Nissan i40 flash
  • Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS5 waterproof camera (for when we don’t want to carry the whole camera bag)
  • mini tripod
  • extra memory cards

OTHER STUFF

  • toiletries
  • sleeping bag – we don’t plan on camping but nice to have, just in case. Also serves as a lumbar support – packed in the waterproof bag strapped on the seat behind me.
  • inflatable camping pillow

I really enjoyed reading your lists, John. Awesome! Reminded me of the logistics for backpacking/climbing expeditions, but much more technical. Eva

As I said, the lists are more for gear-heads, people who are thinking of similar sorts of trips. I found other people’s equipment and spare lists to be really helpful when I read their accounts of long-distance motorcycle trips, particularly what they found most useful and how they improvised repairs.
