John Kenny and his friend David Bowden came up with the idea of a motorcycle trip through South America almost 50 years ago. Then life got in the way…
We finally set out on the adventure at the end of October (2022), accompanied by our wives Liz (John) and Anne (David). The plan was a 3 month road trip, primarily through Chile and Argentina – David and John on motorcycles; Anne and Liz by car. Unfortunately things didn’t quite work out that way. After the first few weeks we realized we had different travel styles, different expectations and so on. So we agreed to go our own ways. And it actually worked out well for everyone.
Originally this blog was about the trip the four of us had planned. It evolved into something different – me riding solo and Liz traveling by planes, trains and automobiles to meet up with me. The trip turned into a five month adventure that far exceeded our expectations.
The menu at right has the complete list of posts I wrote in chronological order from top to bottom. The photo gallery for each post is linked at the end of each blog. Or you can find them by browsing the archives.
For motorcycle enthusiasts: there are links to comprehensive lists I prepared of the modifications I made to the Ténéré 700 before I left; tools & spare parts I took with me; and personal gear I packed.

John Kenny first twisted a throttle at the age of 12 and fell in love instantly. He retired from the Toronto Fire Department in 2021, after 33 years of service, during which he received 3 commendations, including the fire service’s highest honour – The Firefighter Medal of Bravery. John fancies himself a bit of a writer. He has written several scripts, screenplays, essays and other ramblings. Aside from this blog, the only thing that has seen the light of day is a novel – The Spark, a suspense/thriller set in the fire service. John has various other hobbies which occupy – SQUIRREL!!!
