The pages of crime fiction novels are full of detectives, lawyers, doctors, spies and even sweet little old ladies, diverse characters ranging from Miss Marple to Jack Reacher. But firefighters are almost nowhere to be found. That’s surprising, given that it’s a career with more than its share of action and adventure. My two novels, The Spark and Swift Justice, are set in a fictionalized version of the Toronto Fire Department, featuring my lead character Captain Donny Robertson. Donny is a man obsessed with the truth, and that can be a very dangerous thing!
I used my thirty-three years of experience as a firefighter to create a realistic structure for the books. They emphasize the more dramatic aspects of firefighting in order to create an exciting narrative. However, one of my goals is to also give the reader some sense of what being a firefighter is really like. (Yes, I was at the fire pictured here – I’m inside.)
